KALAMAZOO -- Hundreds of millions may be spent trying to purge Kalamazoo of PCB’s, or to at least isolate them from the population.
Another new study suggests that would be a good idea, because they may also pose another health threat. Dr. David Carpenter says a study of residents in a PCB contaminated town in Alabama shows those exposed to the chemical are four times more likely to develop hypertension.
The Poly-chlorinated biphenyl’s were dumped into the Kalamazoo river by the paper companies in the 50’s and early 60’s, before they were deemed a suspected carcinogen. Hypertension means there is additional strain on your circulatory system, and more at risk of heart attack and stroke.
