WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - A man and a woman were killed after their plane crashed and sank into Lake Winnebago.
The pilot made was trying to make an attempted emergency landing about 1/2 mile from shore. According to The Oshkosh Northwestern, an eye-witness watched the plane go into the water. A fishing boat arrived about five minutes after the crash.
Authorities says the plane was travelling from EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh. Fond du Lac County 911 Center recevied a report of a plane crash around around 11:49 a.m.
Divers removed the man and woman from the plane and were pronounced dead on the scene.
The plane went down just east of Wend'ts on the Lake, along the west shorline near the Fond du Lac/Winnebago County line.
The 1940 Piper Cub was registered in Illinois.
Foud du Lac County Sheriff's Department says the National Transportation Safety Board is taking over the investigation.
