VAN DYNE, WI (WTAQ) - The National Transportation Safety Board is identifying the victims from Monday fatal plane crash into Lake Winnebago. 

The pilot, 47-year-old Steven Staples of Makanda, Illinois and 36-year-old Michele Palermo from Kimberly were killed when their single engine plane crashed into about six-feet of water.  The crash happened about a half mile off of the westshore line near Van Dyne. 

The pilot had a campsite at the EAA Air Venture in Oshkosh.  The plane had taken off from one of the two runways at the airport. 

The 1940’s restored Piper plane was registered to Tri Star Aviation Services, based in Wilmington, Delaware. 

The plane was pulled from the water, where it was brought back to Oshkosh to determine the cause of the crash.  The NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating. 

The crash was first reported at 11:49 p.m. on Monday.
